Cody to Cheyenne to Grand Island

Day 21 – Friday, October 22

Out the door by 9. Found a Starbucks. Headed south with the goal of making it to Cheyenne by 4 or 5ish. Maps took us on a great two lane road. Snoiw capped peaks in the distance all the way down. Scenery again was great ..Changes every few miles. Mountains to high plains and back. 70mph on to lane roads. Love it.

At some point came to Thermopolis. Named for the hot springs. Took a spin through town and came upon the Wyoming Dinosaur Center. I think every town claims one. We went in but decided not to cough up the price of admission as we would probably spend 10 minutes. They also had the option of being bussed out to the dinosaur dig center and you could Idiscover your own raptor. We choose a quick walk through the gift shop and got back in our dusty rental unit.

Sunny day and beautiful. An unexpected jewel was the Wind River Canyon on the way out of town. 15-20 miles long, one of the most impressive sites on this trip. I even drove down one of those little gravel roads to the river to get some better photos. Heck its a rental right? At any rate, a first class drive.

Long drive to Cheyenne. It included a 2 hour power drive down from Casper on the interstate. 80Mph posted speed limit. Pulled into good friends Mike and Dee around 5.

Relaxed. Cooked out. Got caught up and had some adult beverages. Beautiful day. Sunny and in the 60’s. Tomorrow we begin our eastward journey towards Michigan. Figuring 4 days

Day 22 – Saturday, October 23

Got up. Had coffee and enjoyed time with the Mores. They had another friend who came in with his daughter and all were planning to go to the Wyoming football game.

Thanks again folks!!!

On the road by 9. Miles to go. And these are Nebraska miles. Notorious. First a quick spin through Cheyenne proper. Irena has never been. Then back roads to Alliance, Nebraska. Oh yeah. I found a must see called ‘Carhenge’. Its only about 100 miles out of our way.

Actually a pretty drive. Prairie grasslands. Rock outcroppings. Took about 3 hours to get there. We even held off stopping because we would use the facilities at the gift shop.

Gift shop was closed. But we did get to walk around. Yep, there it is!  To quote a wise man ‘We came, we saw, we left.’

Went into town, fueled up and picked Grand Island for our evening destination. About 250 miles down the road. Set the cruise at 72, pointed the rental down the 2 lane road and used the afternoon to experience western Nebraska.

We had the road to ourselves. It followed the BNSF tracks. Small towns now and then, sunflower fields waiting to be harvested, range cattle and some other stuff I forgot about.  Interesting to watch the rail traffic.  Dozens, and I mean dozen of 1 1/2 mile long trains queued up and strung out the entire way to Grand Island.  Each waiting for their right of way clearance.  Some moving many not.  Some full, some empty.  Mostly coal but lots of other.

It was getting long in the day.  we stopped in Broken Bow for a break and dialed for motel rooms in Grand Island.  Still over an hour away.  found one and back on the road.  Got into Grand Island.  Had dinner at BWW’s next to the hotel.  Checked in and relaxed.

Tomorrow, continue east.  Tonight no driving.  About 5,800 miles so far I think.  Losing track.

Life is good..
