Day 9  Old Faithful, the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole

Planned on an easy day today. Big thunder boomers over the night. Threw everything in my tent last night. About 5a needed to get up and use the facilities. Couldn’t find my glasses. Found the facilities. Couldn’t find the tent then. It was dark. Eventually I found the tent and cranked off another hour of sleep.

Mike awoke about the same time and we decided to motor down to the shower building. They didn’t open until 8. Coffee at the convenience store. Back to the showers. You give the guy a copy of your campsite receipt. He was proud to announce that the showers were not timed. Just turn them on and let them flow. How nice. We got buzzed in.
We let the tents dry out a bit. Boys got up and motored over to the showers. I tried uploading a blog but no good. Worked on repacking gear. With all the travel I do, I still experience ‘duffel explosion’. Digging through to find something, then all of a sudden crap is everywhere. Getting a little better on this trip. Packed pretty light.
Saddled up and headed to Old Faithful, about 20 miles. Traffic got heavier. Stopped to look at some waterfalls.

Beautiful area. Crossed the continental divide I believe 5 times. Got to the Lodge. Parked in a huge lot. Huge. And it was one of several. Just missed the geyser by about 10 minutes so the next was about an hour and 20 away. We claimed some primo benches and waited. It was very nice out. Sun. Beautiful vistas. Thousands of our closest friends. Geyser went off. Took a minute or two. We left. We came, we saw, we left. Didn’t even go in any of the numerous gift shops.

We scooted out of the lot pretty quick before everyone else could load up the strollers and leave. Headed back through the passes and got on the main road heading south. Destination, the Tetons. It took an hour or so to leave Yellowstone. At times we have a tendency to push the speed limit. Like yesterday when an approaching ranger turned on his lights until we slowed down, which we did. Sometimes you just need those gentle reminders.
Left Yellowstone without fanfare. Stopped at a lodge for lunch and continued south. Into the Grand Teton park. Wow. Great road for a few hours winding along the base of mountains. Stopped a few times for pics.

Motored into Jackson Hole. Neat town. Very upscale. Stopped at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar on the town square. Saddles for stools. Had a beer and called around for motel rooms. Jackson, being what it is, most of the rooms were over $200. And this is their off season. Well with dickering, playing them off each other we finally snagged two rooms at the Virginian. $107. Most we have spent on this trip. Nice place. Restaurant. Liquor store. Drive up to your room. Laundry WiFi. Free coffee in the morning.

Lots of folks from all over in this part of the country. Europe, China, Japan and of course from all over the US. In Yellowstone, a couple from Belgium were trying their hand at camping. Last night a couple from England stopped by our tribal circle in front of our rooms and chatted for 15-20 minutes. Tour bus dropped a bunch of Chinese at the hotel.
So our evening in Jackson was one of taking it easy. Did some laundry. Walked down the 100′ to the liquor store. Pulled out chairs. Dinner was pizza, ordered online and delivered right to our chairs. Not a cloud in the sky. A small group of other touring motorcyclists pulled up their chairs and joined us for an hour or so.
We finished our dinner and beverages. Eyelids were heavy. We ended another great day.
Life is good.

  1. Ahhhh, I adore the Tetons and Jackson Hole…my favorite place on earth so far! Love your blogs and read them with my morning coffee 🙂

  2. Looks like a lot of fun. My wife and I were there four years ago. Started out from our home base, Scottsdale, thru Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, back thru Cheyenne, Colorado, New Mexico and home. 3550 miles. In our truck. Didn’t have bike at the time.

  3. Looks like everyone is having a great time. I’m glad! I’ll be in Jackson Hole in a few weeks – wish the timing could have worked out better. Tell Mores “hello’ from me.

  4. This is really interesting, You’re a very skilled blogger.
