Late Start, Long Day.. Pennsylvania 1st Night

I think when both Carolina’s declared a state of emergency, it solidified our decision to bail.  We wanted to do something different.  Considered going south to the Ohio river, following that to the Mississippi, then follow that north to Minnesota.  Irma is spreading farther west and projected to saturate that area.  So we decided (actually the boys did, I went to bed) to explore PA and the Northeast.

Up very early.  Contractors due in.  Landscaping and master bath.  Timing is everything.  Trip has been planned for months.  We are at the mercy of contractors schedule for the most part.  So with two loaders in the back yard, 12 tons of boulders dumped in the street, 14 tons of cobble stone, two dump trucks, four pallets of Unilock, a crew of 7 ripping out every outdoor plant and the tile guy laying floor and shower tile, I had to point out to one of the tractor guys that his turning point was right on top of out septic tank.  The foreman spayed orange over the area.  A couple more turns on that spot with the tractor and the paint was buried in the mud.  So there ya go!

Irena has it covered…

So I did the only thing I could do… We loaded up the bikes and left.  It was just shy of noon.

We have no particular destination.  No hotels booked.  No camping gear.  We don’t even have any maps.  Just headed south to Ohio, then east to PA.  We figured we would figure it out.

Two laners most of the way.  It was almost noon before we got out.  We saw plenty of Amish, their farms, a Ford Tri-motor airplane, a zillion orange cones (we counted), small towns, big towns, historical towns, trailer park towns, fueled 3 times.  It seemed like it was Friday afternoon rush hour in many spots.  Oh wait, it was!  Almost 7p when I decided to call it a day.  We had put just shy of 300 miles on the bikes. The sun was at our back and you could feel those long shadows that happen at the end of the day with the temperature dropping quickly.  Greenville, PA.  Nice little town in the foothills.  Hotel has a bar, limited selection but on site.  We ordered pizza, boneless wings and breadsticks delivered to their little establishment.  Anchor Man is on the tube and we are laughing and winding down.

No idea whats up for tomorrow.  Not even worried.  I do have to get a new tail light bulb in the morning.  It seems I have no brake lights. We did decide that we should probably get some maps.  Weird thing is, no one sells them any more.  There’s a Walmart in town.  We’ll try there.  As you can tell this production is totally improv.  The only way we were sure we were in PA was the sign ‘Welcome to Pennsylvania’.

I apologize for the meager pics.. Irena did send me more landscaping and tile ones.  But I will spare you.  More to come.  It’s not even ten and all 3 of us are yawning.  What’s that mean?

Life is good.

  1. I was wondering what you meatheads were going to do. You made the right decision…leave Irene alone to deal with the contractors and poke around northeast of Harvey’s path with no maps!
