Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Always love going up there.  It’s labor day and I-75 SB will be a test to the patience of all who travel it.  Especially tonight.  Everyone eking out what they can on the last day of Michigan’s summer.  Heading home from ‘up north’. Toys in tow.  School starts tomorrow..

So what will most likely be for me, the final motorcycle excursion of any length (week or more) for this year starts Wednesday morning.  A good friend, Mike Mores is flying in from Cheyenne, WY tomorrow night.  Mike is the one whom showed us around last summer in WY and MT on the bikes.  He has never been to the UP.  We will load up the bikes Tuesday night, and leave early Wednesday morning.  Weather is showing chance of rain every day.  Nice robust weather..

First night, Drummond Island.  One of my favorites.  A few years ago Irena, the boys and I rented a house on an island off the main island for a week.  Ferry to the big island, boat to the smaller.  Talk about secluded.  Times before that were cabin rentals, all on the main island.

We will spend the next 6 or 7 days following the Lake Superior shore west to Copper Harbor, then south to the Lake Michigan shore on the return trip.  Our accommodations will consist of the some of the most memorable mom and pop establishments around.  Those of you who travel the UP understand.  There might even be a quick trip into Canada at Sault Ste Marie just for grins and bragging rights…

Minutia to ponder while waiting for the next post..  New York City, is closer to Brighton, MI than Copper Harbor, MI.  There is enough water in Lake Superior to cover the North and South American continents under 1 foot of water.  Sault Ste. Marie was founded in 1668.  Michigan has 116 lighthouses.  MI has the highest deposit / recycle rate in the country at 10c per bottle or can.  Michigan’s shoreline, at 3,288 miles is more than any other state except Alaska. which has 6,640 miles.

Bikes are ready.  Just need to finish packing.  Clara (our great Pyrenees) is pacing around, knowing something is up..  Actually she is just pandering for another dog biscuit, I just gave her one.. Bottom line?

Life is good.
