Day 11, July 7th. Wolverine to Greenville. Great sleep last night. Babbling stream, dead quiet and middle of nowhere dark… Took our time gearing up the bikes. Forgot the leftover pizza in the fridge. Stopped at Betty’s for breakfast. 6 or 7 tables and you can watch her make it right there! Amazing.🙂 Another regular stop when heading south…
The ride was uneventful. Sunny but cool. As we rode we stopped and peeled off layers as the day warmed. Definitely not the scenery we’ve been seeing in the last several days but nice. Well kept farms, rolling hills, mile after mile of forests and small towns. Some with lakes and beaches right in town, some with just a gas station and feed store.
Quick trip. Maybe 200 miles in great weather with low traffic. We stretched it to 5 or 6 hours.
M66 is the highway. Communities have banded together to market ‘Michigan’s Route 66’. Colorful billboards announce each of the little towns. Others interspersed ‘Thanks for cruising M66’ & ‘Keep on Cruising’. Good for them.
We saw a yard sale where it appeared that some one had taken their drawers and simply dumped them in the yard (no one was looking through), a tree with hundreds of pairs of shoes hanging from the branches, a farm with a few dozen donkeys and a crop duster entertained us for a bit.
Now you get the idea These trips are not about the destination. But the trip itself. One could get bored but we seldom do.
We are in Greenville. A historic little town 40 or 50 miles NE of Grand Rapids. We came across the ‘Winter Inn’ that is not only a great bar and restaurant but it also has kept up the original rooms upstairs. We took 2 rooms It doesn’t get any more convenient than this. The bikes are parked for the night and we are having a cocktail before drinks. Then we will have a few drinks and then dinner. I think it’s taco night. I could do that. Happy hour here is 7-11p. At least we won’t have to walk far. 🙂. But we still have to navigate the stairs. What is that old saying? Men never grow up, they just learn how to behave in public….
