Weekend in Seattle

Day 14, Friday, October 15

Did our morning routine in Twisp. Decided to head down to Wenatchee, then take US 2 into Seattle. Followed a road through the countryside until we ht the Columbia River again and then followed that in Wenatchee. Another dam. We did not stop.

Apples and hops. Orchards everywhere. Big processing and storage facilities. This isn’t Mr. Peebles Cider Mill. Nice though.. Traffic picked up. Made our way downtown. Very nice historic type downtown. Stopped at the Public Market down on the river. Walked through. Nice break.

Drove along the river. Very nice riverfront park system. Accessible, well laid out. Walked around a bit. Nice green areas. Only problem is the geese like it too. Same as every other park near water. Geese. With it, goose poop.

Back on the road and back on US 2 heading west. Less than 100 miles to Seattle. Traffic fairly heavy. Decided to stop in Levenworth. Barvarian themed little tourist mecca about 10 miles down the road. Wow. Went through town. Not really our thing. Nice for senior bus trips and those who like to wear lederhosen. Back on US 2. Road narrowed to 2 lanes. Beautiful drive across the Cascades. Narrow canyons. Stephens pass. 5 or 6 thousand feet. I think. We were a few hundred feet below the snow line. It took us about an hour and a half to come out the other side.

As we were descending down from the pass, got a call re the Suburban. More damage than they thought. Frame is bent. May need a new frame. They aren’t equipped to handle that. Needs to go to a different shop. They have had it for two weeks. Just finding out now? Well that was not I was expecting to hear.

Getting hungry. Pulled into Snohomish. Cute little town on US 2. Downtown is mostly antique stores and restaurants. Maybe 5 or 6 blocks long with fewer parking places than are needed. Found a mediocre tavern for lunch, then spent an hour or so in and out of some of the shops. It was raining so our enthusiasm was dampened.

Time to head to Jonathan’s. Not far away at all!

Day 15, Saturday, October 16

Nice evening with Jonathan and Ally. Easy. Casual. Ordered out. Nice.

Up early. Heading to Seattle for lunch. Tour a little. Craft show.

Drove around the Capitol Hill area. Jon’s old neighborhood and site of all the protests and occupation zones during the black lives matter disturbances a year ago June. I think Jon realized with tear gas and flash bangs on his street, while a nice trendy area, it was time to find new digs.

Jon’s old digs..

Most of the boarded up windows removed, the occupation zone cleaned out, 13th Police precinct reopened and people on the streets on a beautiful Saturday, things seems almost back to normal.

Headed to one of the numerous ramen restaurants in the area. Lots of Asian influenced eateries. The ramen was unbelievable. Forget the cellophane packaged stuff. No relation what so ever. A complete meal unto itself.

Walked the neighborhood. Headed downtown get a look see. Very diverse. Busy. Traffic. Like any big city. Its been many years since I’ve been there.

Headed to the craft fair at Magnason Park. Old Navy airfield. Hanger 30. Forgot to mention, masks are required everywhere. Even needed to show our vaccination cards or recent Covid test. Like this everywhere. I think you will need your vacc card for restaurants next week.

Spend an hour or two. Good thing you could get drinks.

Headed back. Easy evening. Ordered Thai. Jon and Ally just moved into a new house and they are doing renovations. Starting with the kitchen.

Early evening.

Day 16, Sunday, October 17

Rainy day. Heading to Ally’s folks house for the day. On Whidbey Island. Scooting, trying to make the 11a ferry. A few stops. Got in line and secured a spot on the boat. Big ferry. Lots of traffic to and from. Big island.

Got to their ‘cottage’. Right on the water. Right on a point. Right on the channel where, shipping, whales, fishing and crab boats head in and out to the sound. Nice.

Had a great time. Sitting, talking, I noticed a large black dorsal fin 75’-100’ off their seawall. A pod of Orca’s. Wow. I mean wow. There were 7 or 8. By the time I regained my presence of mind they started moving into the channel. They entertained us for 30-45 minutes. Wow.

Clam chowder, salad, plenty of adult beverages. Yes another nice day.  Absolutely wonderful people.

7p ferry back. Just relaxed and enjoy the rest of the evening.

Grand-dogs, Tater and Dewey

Tomorrow, Monday is the last day. Tuesday we start our journey back..

Life is good.
